Captured

Edwin Koo is an internationally recognised documentary photographer, a photography mentor, an author, and a former photojournalist with The Straits Times.

He is also the founder of the Singapore-based photography collective Captured. With more than 20 years of experience in photography spanning the genres of news, editorial, documentary and commercial – Edwin is one of Singapore’s most recognised photography practitioners. His international awards include: UNICEF Photo of the Year, Getty Images Grant for Editorial Photography, and ICON de Martell Cordon Bleu Award. His photographs have been exhibited in France, Germany, The Netherlands, China, Turkey, Nepal and Singapore. He has also been published in international titles such as GEO, Le Monde and The New York Times.

Turning his focus to commercial work in 2013, he led a group of like-minded photographers to undertake creative projects, including National Day 2013 “Our Stories”, SEA Games 2015 (Singapore), SG50 project Island Nation and most recently, a ground-up community outreach initiative called One Portrait. He has also worked personally on numerous photography projects with long-time clients such as United Overseas Bank (UOB), Ministry of Culture, Community & Youth (MCCY), and National University of Singapore (NUS).

Blending the discipline of commercial work with his practice of documentary photography, Edwin is adept at delivering images which are at once surprising, lyrical, and authentic.

“I believe that strong photography is one that evokes a myriad of emotions and empathy, winning over the viewer even without a single word uttered.”
